Located in the heart of Weserstraße, Venue is perfectly situated amidst the fabulous vintage stores, cafés, restaurants, and bars that define the area. If you’re new to Neukölln, we recommend starting at Weserstraße and walking towards the canal to soak in the local vibe.

    Why do we love Venue so much? Firstly, the interior. The minimalist design, complemented by beautiful dried flowers and vases (which are also for sale), creates a welcoming and stylish atmosphere. Secondly, the brunch experience here is customizable; everything is served in small bowls, allowing you to mix and match your favorites. Highlights include scrambled eggs, waffles, apricot croissants, and homemade cakes. Thirdly, the coffee is exceptional, with beans sourced from Fjord Coffee.

We highly recommend trying the well-seasoned shakshuka, crispy paninis, homemade granola bowl, and egg florentine with poached egg. The pancakes are also a standout, featuring toppings like bacon among other delicious options. For those with dietary preferences, dots offers a variety of vegan choices.

    The 21gramm is a beautiful oasis of calm in the middle of gloomy Neukölln. It is one of the most aesthetically pleasing cafés in Berlin, with a large terrace and an architecturally unique building. The café also serves an incredible array of drinks. We recommend the “Birnini” with pureed pear and the “Bellini” with pureed peach.

    The Sorrel is another pearl in the Neukölln brunch landscape. The restaurant is super stylish and has plenty of outdoor seating. You can enjoy various unusual breakfast specialties here seven days a week. How about French toast with burnt apple puree and sherry caramel? Or are you more in the mood for Fried Eggs & Labneh with Confit Garlic? The chefs at Sorrel know what they’re doing. 

    Sorrel offers a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu (by the way, they also serve fantastic natural wine) that focuses on seasonality and the quality of the produce. The menu changes frequently based on seasonality and the availability of the best products. The coffee from local roasters, such as Fjord Coffee Roasters, also tastes excellent.

    To ensure you don’t miss out on the Sorrel experience, we strongly recommend booking a table in advance. Additionally, it’s best to bring cash with you, as the restaurant operates on a cash-only basis.

    If you prefer something less fancy and more authentic, Café Mona Lisa is the place for you. The interior is rather “shabby chic”, here it’s all about the fresh baked goods and the excellent Turkish breakfast.

    You can choose from various breakfast platters and there are also many vegetarian and vegan options. We particularly like the menemen (Turkish egg dish with tomato and peppers) and the delicious cakes. The prices are fair and the service is super friendly. Those with a bigger appetite will also find what they are looking for: options like avocado bread, bread with goat’s cheese, walnuts, plums, and fig jam, or a red smoothie bowl with homemade granola and fruit.     Make American breakfast great again… Gringa is the Californian diner we didn’t know we needed. With amazing chicken waffles (!), fish tacos, pancakes, blueberry waffles, milkshakes and other American specialities they stole our heart at the first visit. Gringa clearly differentiates itself from other brunch spots in Barcelona and that’s what we love about it. Not only from a culinary perspective, Gringa has its own handwriting and makes every visit a special brunch experience. On the weekends you can expect a queue as they don’t take reservations.

    Good news for everyone who is in Raval: Gringa has a sister in Raval too (where you actually can make reservations).

    If you’re looking for delicious pancakes, Cremat11 is the place to go. The American brunch restaurant is one of our favorites – here, you can enjoy a variety of four-tier (!) pancake creations with passion fruit, chocolate with wild berries, and caramelized bananas. But if you’re more in the mood for something savory, this is also the place for you. Every day from 10 am to 4 pm, you can get delicious Eggs Benedict, scrambled eggs, breakfast burgers, pancakes with bacon, and much more. We also like that Cremat11 has a lovely terrace on a quiet square for the often crowded El Born.

    T 44

    If you attach great importance to aesthetics at brunch, T 44 or Taulat 44 in the quiet Poblenou is the place for you. The café and brunch restaurant opened in 2023 and is a real feast for the eyes. The minimalist and stylish design extends from the silver metallic plates to the presentation of the delicious cakes and brunch specialties. It’s best to see for yourself. The T 44 has already experienced a big hype in Barcelona after a short time – this may be due not only to the great design but also to the unusual brunch creations such as green hummus and “fosforitos” and the excellent coffee. When you enter the brunch restaurant in Poblenou, the smell of frog-baked carrot cake and croissants wafts into your nose.

    Caravelle

    Caravelle is a true classic in Raval. You sit here in a cozy atmosphere and have a great selection of homemade breakfast dishes, specialty coffee, cocktails, and artisan craft beer. With roots in Australia and London, this Melbourne-style café arrived on the scene back in 2012, ushering in a new era of brunch and specialty coffee in Barcelona. Caravelle takes its coffee seriously, offering expertly brewed drinks using beans from local roasters.

    We recommend trying the French toast, the croissant waffle, and the homemade (and not too sweet) made-by-hand soda cans in bright colors. Salads and healthy bowls are suitable for those who prefer a more nutritious breakfast.

Each dish has fresh, high-quality ingredients and is beautifully presented. Our menu highlights are the Eggs Benedict with salmon, the Huevos Rancheros, the French toast, and the fried green tomatoes. We prefer to sit on the large terrace (it’s worth booking).     As we all know, you eat with your eyes: The Egg Lab is one of Barcelona’s most aesthetically pleasing brunch restaurants. However, the brunch spot with three different locations in Barcelona impresses not only with its futuristic design with colorful walls and organic shapes but also with its menu. Here, you will find – as the name suggests – egg dishes in their highest form. With a lot of creativity, you will find the perfect Eggs Benedict (an excellent recommendation is the Korean Chicken Benedict variation), Mexican Eggs Rancheros, and sourdough bread with kale and sautéed mushrooms. The Egg Lab’s motto is “feel good, be good” – we could hardly imagine a better place to feel good.

  • Agnès Varda: Photographing, Filming, Recycling – A review

    The first time I visited this exhibition I was with a friend; we wandered around the rooms commenting on her curious photography, her quirky and beautiful films, how we’d love to visit Paris, the film Amèlie, whether or not afterward we should get an Aperol spritz. The subsequent times I went alone, quiet Sundays spent in the company of strangers, gathered around wall text each reading the version easiest for us, sitting or standing in hushed dark rooms to watch and re-watch her films. I was struck not only by her creative, unique, and interesting work, her impact, and her influence in her field; but also by how she did so much, was in so many places, met and witnessed and documented these events and people that made history and shaped our society. An artist celebrated now and during her time but still not enough, this exhibition is a truly inspiring celebration of her life’s work and a must-visit while it’s still on.

    Agnès Varda (Brussels, 1928 – Paris, 2019) was a photographer, filmmaker, visual artist, and pioneer of the Nouvelle Vague, a revolutionary film movement that broke traditional cinematic norms in the late 1950s. One of the few women directors of her generation, she produced a completely unique body of work including over 40 films, including feature films and shorts, fiction and documentary, and embracing both analogue and digital cinema. Working with few resources and limited recognition, she is increasingly viewed as one of the most important creative forces of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, pushing boundaries and uncovering new possibilities of visual language at the height of the explosion of the digital age. The exhibition Agnès Varda: Photographing, Filming, Recycling traces Varda’s evolution as an artist, showcasing her work across multiple media: from film to photography to installations. 

    At the heart of Varda’s legacy is her unique approach to cine-writing, where she blends visual storytelling with personal, often poetic narration. She seamlessly merged fiction with documentary, and imagination with reality, pushing the boundaries of what cinema could be. Her films, known for their formal innovation and deep sensitivity to their subjects, balanced spontaneity with careful planning. This approach had a profound impact on the Nouvelle Vague, marking her as one of the movement’s most original voices. Varda said, “I don’t want to show but to make people feel a desire to see.”

    A key theme of the exhibition is Varda’s deep connection to political and social issues, consistently focusing on marginalised groups through her feminist engagement and support for movements like the Black Panthers. Her films, such as Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962) and Sans toit ni loi (1985), blend personal stories with broader societal issues like war, poverty, and gender roles. This global engagement took her to China during Mao Zedong’s Hundred Flowers Campaign, where she documented the revolution through thousands of photos, and to Cuba, where she captured the post-revolution spirit in Salut les Cubains (1964). Varda’s time in 1960s Los Angeles further expanded her work, as she filmed the counterculture, protests, and leaders like Huey Newton in Black Panthers (1968). Returning to LA in the early ’80s, she explored community identity through mural art in Mur Murs (1981). In Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (2000), Varda compassionately highlighted society’s outcasts, using lightweight digital cameras to film with an intimacy that reflected her lifelong curiosity, always centering her subjects’ humanity.

    Varda’s commitment to feminism was a crucial aspect of both her life and work. She consistently challenged the depiction of women on screen, shattering stereotypes and creating female characters searching for freedom. Her portrayal of women’s bodies, including nudity, defied male fetishistic voyeurism, offering instead a perspective rooted in liberation and authenticity. Varda was a vocal advocate for women’s place in the film industry, using her platform to denounce structural inequalities. Notably, she participated in the symbolic climbing of the stairs at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018, organised by the Collectif 50/50, where she publicly called out the persistent gender imbalances in cinema. Through her work and activism, Varda paved the way for future generations of women filmmakers, challenging an often hostile industry and contributing to the growing presence of women in cinema.

    To coincide with the exhibition, La Filmoteca de Catalunya is screening a selection of her most iconic films, celebrating Varda’s enduring influence on global cinema. From her groundbreaking contributions to the Nouvelle Vague to her later documentary works, this exhibition reaffirms Agnès Varda’s status as one of the most original and impactful artists of the 20th century.

    Key works to see:

    La Pointe Courte (1954), Varda’s debut, merges documentary and fiction, telling two parallel stories: the daily life of fishermen in Sète and a Parisian couple’s troubled marriage. The film’s blend of documentary realism and personal drama, filmed with non-professional actors and real locations, set the tone for the Nouvelle Vague. Its exploration of mundane versus profound moments became a recurring theme in Varda’s work.

    L’Opéra-Mouffe (1958), or Diary of a Pregnant Woman, juxtaposes scenes of marginalised people on Paris’s Rue Mouffetard with a pregnant woman’s reflections. Varda’s poetic style blends social commentary with personal narrative, using stark imagery to address poverty while contemplating motherhood. The film’s mix of reality and imagination highlights her unique storytelling approach.

    Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962) follows a singer, Cléo, over two hours as she awaits biopsy results. Set in near real-time, the film immerses viewers in Cléo’s existential crisis, transitioning from superficiality to a deep exploration of life, death, and connection. Varda’s innovative use of narrative time and structure, set against the backdrop of the Algerian War, makes this one of her most iconic works.

    Sans toit ni loi (1985), or Vagabond, reconstructs Mona’s last weeks as a drifter through the perspectives of those she met. Varda’s fragmented narrative explores Mona’s resistance to societal norms and the challenge of fully knowing another person. This haunting portrayal of solitude and freedom won the Golden Lion at the 1985 Venice Film Festival.

    Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (2000), or The Gleaners and I, explores marginalisation and poverty through the lives of modern-day gleaners—people who collect what others discard. Using lightweight digital cameras, Varda captures these individuals with empathy and curiosity, while drawing a parallel between her own artistic process and their act of gathering, creating a thoughtful meditation on waste, creativity, and survival.

    Bar Brutal 54

    Let’s start with a bar in Berlin that is probably one of the most frequented bars in our author’s circle of friends. Why? Very good drinks, very beautiful people, very aesthetic decor (and probably the coolest bright red toilets in Berlin). With its dark walls, wooden furniture and candlelight, this popular bar on Hobrechtstraße is the perfect place to sink away for many hours. Bar Brutal has built up a real regular clientele over the years. We particularly like the Whiskey Sour here, but you can order any cocktail on the menu and you’re guaranteed to enjoy it.

    Bar Brutal is open every day from 7pm till late. Expect it to be quite busy at the weekend. Reservations are not possible.

    Lamm Bar

    At the other end of Berlin, in Prenzlauer Berg, you will find another favorite bar. The Lamm Bar has a nice outdoor area, great and attentive staff and excellent drinks. Here you can order either small drinks (“Lämmchen”) or full-sized drinks (“Lämmer”). We recommend the “Lämmchen” (lambs) of the week. Gin drinkers should try the homemade gin. The cocktails are creative, incredibly tasty and varied.

    Nathanja & Heinrich

    For our author, Nathanja & Heinrichs in Neukölln’s Weserstraße is one of those bars you always go to when you’re simply looking for a good, uncomplicated bar. Incidentally, with its candlelight and high ceilings, it’s also a great date location. 

    The outdoor area is well-frequented in good weather. Inside, Nathanja & Heinrich is spacious, with exposed walls, comfortable armchairs, wooden furniture, and good music. In the evening, the restaurant transforms into a charming bar. The well-stocked bar offers friendly service, and the lighting with candles and warm tones creates a pleasant ambience. The clientele is mixed, with groups, dates, and regulars who come here every weekend.

    The drinks are also impressive—we particularly like the Gin Basil Smash with lots of fresh basil. For us, it’s one of the best, perhaps even the best, in the city!

    Krüger

    The Krüger bar in Prenzlauer Berg is a real eye-catcher. You can see that much effort has gone into the interior design. Various lights, works of art, and decorations make the Krüger a bar with character. Moreover, the drinks are good (and comparatively cheap), and the bartenders are very friendly.

    A mix of everything makes Krüger what it is: wherever you look, there are all kinds of people sitting and standing, all coming together to celebrate their free time. So, if you fancy a bar with a great mix of guests and atmosphere, you should go to Krüger near Helmholtzplatz.

    Bar Milano

    “Aperitivo Italiano” is the motto of Bar Milano, a bar in Berlin Mitte that brings a touch of Italian elegance to Berlin’s nightlife. The bar has simple, modern furnishings and a minimalist design.

    Spumante is an Italian sparkling white wine. The Bar Bistro Spumante in Kreuzberg, founded in 2023, has it on offer! Changing drinks and dishes will make you feel like you’re in the Mediterranean. The prices are reasonable, and the bar invites you to hang around for hours. In addition to Mediterranean classics such as Campari, Ouzo, and Pastis, there is also Cynar Spritz, Averna Sour, and Frangelico. If you’re hungry, you can enjoy Italian vacation fare, from calamari and spanakopita to anchovy sandwiches. The vacation mood rises!

    Phantom Bar

    The Phantom Bar in Berlin’s Torstraße started as an illegal secret club in Neukölln and has been at least as secretive as it is popular among Berlin’s party scene ever since. Why? The new location in Mitte is characterized by a beautiful building on several floors, a prominent inner courtyard, and a young, hip crowd that likes to party. The Phantom Bar is not just a regular bar but has a dance floor where you can dance to house tunes. Entry costs €10, and the bar closes at around 6 am. So if you can’t decide between a bar and a club, this is the place for you.

    The Luzia Bar in Berlin Kreuzberg has all the qualities we love about a bar: Candlelight, delicious drinks, good music, and a cozy atmosphere. Paolo Pinkel not only mixes fantastic cocktails (we recommend the Amaretto Sour and Espresso Martini) but also offers three different international cuisines. 

    The spacious rooms with open glass facades in Karl-Marx-Straße are ideal for a birthday party (book in advance) or an evening with friends.

    Old, recycled tree trunks line the path to the tables, photo wallpaper with lush, tropical rainforests adorns the walls, and the mirror-tiled ceiling makes the lianas seem to grow into infinity – accompanied by dim lighting and a relaxed atmosphere.

    The jungle bar is a visual eye-catcher and offers outstanding cocktails. We recommend the house creations and the Gin Basil Smash.

    Möbel-Olfe in Berlin Kreuzberg is a popular bar for the queer community. You’ve come to the wrong place if you’re looking for a relaxed bar evening. Instead, it’s loud and full; people smoke, dance to different DJs, exchange numbers, and socialize. You always meet new people at Möbel-Olfe. 

    We particularly like the decor: satellite dishes above the long wooden bar, natural grass nailed to the wall, deer antlers, and a white-tiled bar – it’s all here.

    We recommend the (cheap) Moscow Mule and the freshly tapped Polish beer.

    If you prefer to try out unusual cocktail creations in a bar, the Victoria Bar in Berlin Schöneberg is the place to be. The bar has a huge selection of cocktails and long drinks, including classics and many of its creations with names such as “Penicillin,” “Rattlesnake,” and “El Diablo.” The bartenders know their way around and are happy to give you recommendations. The Victoria Bar is also known for its large selection of champagne cocktails.

    The Victoria Bar has been a fundamental institution in Berlin for 26 years and attracts a regular clientele. It is a place for sophisticated night owls and outstanding drinks.

    The countdown is on: Until 24 November 2024 you can still visit the Manifesta 15 biennial in Catalonia! This is not just another biennial – Manifesta 15 brings a unique cultural approach to each new location.

    With its roots as the European Nomadic Biennial, this event is reinvented every two years in a new host city, bringing a fresh perspective to both the art and the communities that host it.

    And this year, Manifesta 15 taking over Barcelona and its surrounding metropolitan region in a way that will make the 2024 edition unlike any other.

    What is Manifesta?

    Manifesta offers a unique way to experience art beyond traditional boundaries.

    Founded in 1996 to explore cultural change and socio-political shifts across Europe, Manifesta selects a new city every two years, transforming it into a platform for creativity, dialogue, and exploration. Each location brings its own flavor and themes to Manifesta, and in return, Manifesta transforms its host with a series of immersive installations, workshops, and collaborations that leave a lasting impact.

    What makes Manifesta 15 so special?

    Manifesta 15 is the largest edition of the biennial yet. Spanning across a 3000 square kilometer area with a population of 5.1 million people, it will be hosted by an unprecedented 12 cities, all within the metropolitan region of Barcelona. Each venue symbolizes a specific facet of the biennial’s overarching themes: Balancing Conflicts, Cure and Care, and Imagining Futures.

    For the first time, Manifesta’s reach extends beyond a single city, inviting visitors to explore the cultural wealth of towns often left off the tourist map – like El Prat de Llobregat, Sabadell, Terrassa, and Sant Adrià de Besòs.     The Three Chimneys (Sant Adrià de Besòs)

    In our opinion, The Three Chimneys is probably the most interesting venue of Manifesta 15. This former power plant, opened to the public for the first time, is an iconic symbol of resilience and urban renewal, perfectly aligned with the biennial’s themes. Inside, installations across the old turbine hall reflect on adaptation, environmental impact, and the delicate balance between progress and preservation, adding a raw, gritty depth to each piece.

    We particularly loved how the outdoor area connects art with community. Visitors can watch painters, read the Manifesta booklet, or enjoy a coffee by the sea at the open-air café (open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am – 9pm). For us, this setting isn’t just an exhibit space – it’s a lively symbol of how the old can inspire new connections. If you’re attending Manifesta 15, The Three Chimneys is a must-see.

    Monastery of Sant Cugat (Sant Cugat del Vallès)

    The Monastery of Sant Cugat is a must-visit destination on your Manifesta itinerary. Located in the charming town of Sant Cugat, just north of Barcelona, the site offers a delightful atmosphere and a variety of inspiring exhibitions and installations. Founded in the 9th century, the monastery features a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural elements. Across two floors and a lovely garden, you can explore artworks that resonate with the Cure and Care theme of Manifesta.

    Gustavo Gili (Barcelona)

    Gustavo Gili in Barcelona-Sants, once a publishing house, is a notable example of Catalan architecture from the 1950s. For Manifesta 15, the Municipality of Barcelona temporarily allocated the building to the biennale to serve as its headquarters. Here, you can find three archival presentations: The first showcases artistic research on the archives of five pedagogical situations from 20th-century Catalonia. The second takes the form of an “archive-library,” focusing on Barcelona’s cultural evolution. The third presentation centers on Black life in Barcelona, exploring its history and customs.

    Can Trinxet (L’Hospitalet de Llobregat)

    Located in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, the former textile factory Can Trinxet showcases one exhibition by the Italien-Senegalese artist Binta Diaw. „Dïà s p o r a“ is about hair braiding amongst African women as a practice of resistance. For this exhibition, the artist collaborated with members of the African diaspora in L’Hospitalet to weave together long braids of synthetic hair.

    Can Trinxet was first occupied in 1890 and later became the largest industrial complex in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, a city with magnificent industrial heritage. This venue is one of the many architectural examples of the growing industrialisation that took place in Catalonia throughout the 19th century.

    Casa Gomis (El Prat de Llobregat)

    Casa Gomis is another highlight of Manifesta 15. Here, architecture meets art to explore themes of personal identity and collective memory. Designed by Antoni Bonet i Castellana, Casa Gomis is a Modernist villa set in the serene Llobregat Delta Reserve, creating a peaceful yet symbolically charged environment. This setting is ideal for Elmo Vermijs’s installation, “Parliament of Trees,” which thoughtfully merges the structure with nature, prompting reflection on urban growth and its environmental impact. Vermijs’s work uses trees as both symbol and medium, creating a dialogue between architecture and nature that critiques modern encroachments on natural spaces.

    Located near Barcelona’s airport, Casa Gomis is approximately a 30-minute taxi ride from the city and can be accessed by booking a time slot due to its popularity and limited capacity.

    The See of Ègara (Terrassa)

    Located one hour by train from Barcelona, this ancient site in Terrassa transports you back to the golden age of the 5th and 6th centuries. This remarkable historical complex features the churches of Sant Pere, Sant Miquel, and Santa Maria, each offering a glimpse into the past.

    At this site, you can experience large-scale installations by international artists, including Marcos Kueh from Malaysia, Tanja Smeets from the Netherlands, and Antoni Miralda from Catalonia. The juxtaposition of this unique ancient site with contemporary art creates a captivating experience that we truly appreciated. If you enter the store, you’ll find a white cloud above your head and a great selection of vintage pieces in two rooms. Zoetrope’s collection ranges from unique vintage pieces to contemporary designs. They also have a rack outside with five € per piece.

    At Zoetrope Vintage, you can find independently owned, hand-picked vintage and secondhand clothes for all genders, locally designed and upcycled pieces, jewelry, and accessories like sunglasses. They have a great selection of midi and maxi skirts, which we love.

    But you can not only buy second-hand clothes here; you can also sell them! Every Wednesday to Friday between 1:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., you can come by and sell your discarded clothes to Bunker for a genuinely sustainable shopping experience.

Here, the excellent natural wines taste best paired with fresh dishes such as peach caprese, house made linguine tossed in a verdant basil pesto, fresh pappardelle with a veg ragu and sticky date pudding. Mmmh! By the way, you can order the wines by the glass, bottle or even to take away. The Sway Bar only offers natural wines that have been produced organically without additives.

    In addition to fantastic wines, great coffee, and French food, there are changing exhibitions here, as the Recorder is also a gallery. The owners have put a lot of heart and soul into their bar and made many things themselves, such as the ceramic tableware and the tables. For us, it’s a must for anyone who wants to try out new natural wines in a great atmosphere.

    Since its opening in June 2021, Valla Vino has been a place for sustainable natural wine enjoyment in the capital. If you want to explore the world of natural wines in Berlin, you can’t go past Vallo Vino. There are around 25 open wines of all colors on tap and over 200 wines on the shelves (the cheapest wine already starts at € 9.90).

    Vallo Vino specializes in orange wines and offers a unique tasting experience beyond traditional wine categories. With their deep understanding of the wines, the friendly staff are always ready to guide you through the diverse selection. The wine bar enriches Prenzlauer Berg with regular kitchen takeovers and trendy pop-ups in the Berlin gastro scene.

    Motif Wein in Berlin’s Neukölln district is a creative wine space that has become a hotspot for natural wine lovers. Located at Weserstraße 189, Motif Wein offers a unique blend of natural wines, music and cultural events. The extensive selection of natural wines includes organic, biodynamic and minimally invasive varieties, carefully selected to offer a diverse and high-quality tasting experience. A wine tasting voucher (6 wines, cheese and olives) costs €35 and is a wonderful date idea.

    Our verdict: Motiv Wein is the ideal place to browse LPs over a good glass of natural wine and discover the weekly concert program. Every Friday and Saturday from 6 – 9 pm, Motif Wein broadcasts live from the store window with some of their favorite DJs.

    Why natural wine?

    For some time now, natural wine has been experiencing a real hype that is increasingly taking over Berlin. But why is everyone so keen on cloudy, unfiltered wine anyway? Natural wines are made with minimal intervention in the winemaking process, often with organic or biodynamic grapes and without adding chemicals or artificial ingredients. The result is unique wines that express their terroir and are usually more sustainable. 

    It’s worth noting that natural wines, due to their lack of sulfites or additives, also reduce the risk of headaches and hangovers. But you better try for yourself.

    Barcelona is a city known for its beaches and iconic architecture, but what about its parks, gardens, and green spaces? With low rainfall throughout most of the year, Barcelona isn’t known for being the greenest city, with public areas typically consisting of stone plazas and playgrounds, a few trees, and little or no grass. But as always, if you know where to look, you can always find something special.     Parc de la Ciutadella

    Parc de la Ciutadella is one of the city’s most accessible green spaces, a huge park in the centre of Barcelona that’s perfect for meeting with friends, going for a walk, sightseeing, or taking some time for yourself. Originally a military fortress, the park is now home to many attractions like the famous Cascada Monumental, an impressive gold fountain designed by Josep Fontserè, and a lake where you can rent rowboats and float on the water. This iconic Barcelona park also houses the Barcelona Zoo, the Catalan Parliament, and several playgrounds, making it the perfect destination for families. 

    Make sure to also check out the Umbracle, a modernist building also designed by Josep Fontserè and built by Josep Amargós between 1883 and 1887, a steel and brick structure that creates a kind of greenhouse, where plant species from 20 different countries have been planted and grow in rows under its arches.

    Parc de Cervantes

    Parc de Cervantes is a little further from the centre, located near the University of Barcelona in Les Corts. Wander through its winding paths that weave through an extensive rose garden, featuring over 10,000 roses of various species and colours—make sure to visit in spring, when all of the flowers are in bloom. Conveniently located near the Zona Universitaria metro station, this park in Barcelona is the perfect relaxed weekend destination.

    Jardins del Palau de Pedralbes

    Next to the Palau de Pedralbes, these gardens tucked away from the city centre are definitely worth the detour. Wander through tidy lawns, vibrant flower beds, fountains, and sculptures. With the historic Palau de Pedralbes as a backdrop, each garden has its own features, the main ones including the Fountain of Hercules, where water flows from a wrought iron dragon’s head, and a small pergola, both designed by Gaudí. If you’re looking for a peaceful park in Barcelona to spend a quiet afternoon, these gardens are the perfect retreat.

    Horta Labyrinth

    One of Barcelona’s oldest gardens, Horta Labyrinth is known for its stunning hedge maze, picturesque ponds, and sculptures. Its construction first started in 1798 for Catalan landowner and scientist Joan Antoni Desvalls Marquès de Llupià i d’Alfarràs, a neoclassical garden built across three terraces, featuring neo-Arabic and neo-Gothic elements. Over time, descendants of the marquis expanded the complex, adding a romantic garden with flower beds, squares, large trees, and a waterfall, as well as a water channel between the terraces of the neoclassical garden. The garden has been open to the public since 1971. 

    Located in the Horta-Guinardó district, this park is a favourite among families and couples, a beautiful leafy green space away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Get lost in the labyrinth or explore the beautiful surrounding gardens with their fountains and flowers.

    Parc Güell

    Parc Güell might be the most famous of Barcelona’s parks, a UNESCO World Heritage site designed by the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí. Admire its sculptures and stunning architectural features, and its views of the city and the Mediterranean. Key features include the serpentine bench that wraps around the main terrace and the colourful mosaic-covered dragon at the entrance, which has become a symbol of the park. 

    While Parc Güell does charge an entrance fee, you can enter the park for free with the city’s Gaudir Mes pass, which is available for residents and tourists alike. The pass is intended to enable any enthusiasts of art and culture to experience many of the city’s attractions either for free or with a discount. Simply make an appointment for a video call with the council to have your request processed, and enjoy attractions like Parc Güell, Montjuic castle, and more.

    Parks of Montjuïc

    Montjuïc mountain borders Barcelona to the west, and is home to some of the nicest parks and gardens in Barcelona, as well as plenty of leafy trails that wind uphill to stunning viewpoints of the city. Some of our favourite gardens here include the Botanical Garden, which are divided into several themed sections, highlighting flora from regions like California, Chile, South Africa, and Australia. The botanical gardens are also free with the Gaudir mes pass, which makes visiting this garden even more accessible. 

    Another standout on Montjuïc is the Jardins Mossèn Costa i Llobera created in the 1970s to pay homage to Mallorcan poet Miquel Costa i Llobera. These unique gardens are situated in a part of Montjuïc that is protected from the northern wind, creating a microclimate with a temperature that’s two degrees cooler than the rest of the city, which allows for some 800 species of cactus and other succulent plants to thrive. 

    Parc del Turó

    Located in the Sant Gervasi neighbourhood, Parc del Turó is a peaceful park with green, winding pathways, picturesque ponds, a playground and recreation area with a table tennis table, and a small cafe that’s perfect for enjoying an afternoon drink in the shade. This park in Barcelona is also nearby some of the best specialty coffee spots in the Sant Gervasi neighbourhood. Get a flat white to-go and enjoy it at this serene spot.

    Jardí de la Fundació Julio Muñoz Ramonet

    A stone’s throw from the busy Avinguda Diagonal, this idyllic garden in Barcelona is a true oasis in the heart of the city. Located in the Sant-Gervasi neighbourhood, this once-private garden was commissioned in 1916 by Fernando Fabra y Puig, and built by renowned landscape architect Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier, who is credited for introducing the concept of the ‘Mediterranean garden’ to Spain. The garden, which features several terraces, rose-covered pergolas, and a central rectangular pond, surrounds the main house, a Novecentist-style palace designed by Enric Sagnier in 1917. In 1945, the property was purchased by businessman Julio Muñoz Ramonet, who later had the garden remodelled by Joan Mirambell i Ferran, introducing new levels and rearranging the layout. Following a lengthy legal battle after Muñoz Ramonet’s death, the estate was eventually gifted to the city and opened to the public in 2016.

    These gardens are located near the historic Hospital de Sant Pau, which between 1401 and 1926 was the general hospital of the city of Barcelona. Named after poet Manuel Rubio i Lluch, these gardens are a hidden treasure providing a peaceful space to rest and relax.

    The first thing you see when you enter Seven Heaven Breakfast on Savignyplatz in Berlin Charlottenburg is blue, blue, and blue. The walls and furnishings are all painted in a vibrant royal blue. We felt at home there. You can assemble your own breakfast (rolls, bread, vegetables, fruit, cheese, salmon, egg and more). They also serve different bagels, Austrian “Kaiserschmarrn,” and delicious French toast loaded with berries (definitely a must!). And if you’re starving, you can try the Croque burger with cheese, egg, caramelized onions, and ham. 

    If you fancy a boozy brunch (which is very popular among Berliners), you can order Mimosa and Espresso Martini with your breakfast. We recommend reserving a table.

    Visiting the Schwarzes Café on Savignyplatz in Berlin Charlottenburg is a must whenever we are in Berlin. The Schwarze Café is much more than just a café – it is one of the few restaurants and brunch venues in Berlin that is open (almost) around the clock. The Schwarze Café in Berlin, founded in 1978, is perfect for enjoying a delicious brunch with friends and great for lunch, cake in between, or drinks in the evening. 

    On two floors, the black walls, many works of art, and the charm of this old Berlin apartment with its high ceilings make you feel right at home. The prices are also fair. We recommend the creamy scrambled eggs, the “Kaiserschmarrn”, and the breakfast platters. But you can order anything here – you won’t be disappointed. Here (as in many breakfast stores in Berlin), only cash payment is possible.

    If you don’t feel like waiting for a table at Benedict Berlin, you don’t have to miss out on a good breakfast. Just a few meters away, another breakfast place has opened—All About Café West. We particularly liked the friendly service and the egg drop (soft toasted brioche bread with eggs, hollandaise sauce, and various fillings) sandwiches. The coffee here is particularly aromatic; the beans come from Brazil.

    Café Friedrichs

    Café Friedrichs is a great brunch spot in the north of Berlin-Charlottenburg, close to the University of the Arts and Charlottenburg Palace. Café Friedrichs has quickly made a name in the otherwise quiet Mierendorffplatz neighborhood. And we know why: Besides freshly roasted coffee with latte art, they serve delicious pancakes, healthy bowls (e.g., with falafel or beet), generously filled sourdough sandwiches, tasty scrambled eggs, and shakshuka. The café also offers several vegan options. The cozy atmosphere invites you to read and look out of the window. In summer, however, we prefer to sit on the terrace and enjoy our cappuccino in the sun.

    The brunch café Maikind Berlin has only recently opened and is already one of our favorites. Maikind has perfected the aesthetic presentation of delicious breakfast specialties. In addition to artistically decorated smoothie bowls (for example, with mango and passion fruit), you will find fresh juices in all colors, a Mediterranean breakfast platter with egg and halloumi, juicy egg drop sandwiches, carrot cake, chicken brioche, and pancakes. Mmmhh! Do not forget the delicious coffee you can enjoy here in a stylish and elegant setting near Berlin’s Ludwigkirchplatz.     Die Stulle

    “Stulle” is the German term for sandwiches. Originally, back in the days, “Stulle” meant a thick bread without toppings. You will find exactly the opposite in the Charlottenburg café “Die Stulle.” Every piece of bread is a miniature work of art, reinterpreted, creative, and piled high. At €17 per “Stulle,” it’s not cheap, but every bite is a delight.

    There is also something for sweet tooths here: strawberry French toast, smoothie bowls, chia pudding, and pancakes. The café near Berlin’s Savignyplatz relies on high-quality ingredients and regional suppliers. By the way, the Brunch Café in Berlin Charlottenburg also offers delicious catering. We recommend making a reservation.

    Café 1love4 Ku’damm

    You will find the 1love4 Café directly on Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm. As the name suggests, nothing works here without good coffee. In typical Ku’damm style, you can find various superfood smoothies and juices here. In addition to homemade sourdough bread, there are multiple bagels, crepes, pancakes, and different egg dishes (you have to try the scrambled eggs with truffle and parmesan!) 

    We particularly like the interior, with different wooden furniture and a beautiful outdoor area, where you can watch the action on the famous shopping street undisturbed. Another plus point is that the café is very laptop-friendly. Check it out!
