  • Where to find the best natural wine bars in Barcelona

Natural wine lovers – This one’s for you! As in many other cities, natural wine is becoming increasingly popular in Barcelona. If you’re passionate about natural wine or simply want to try something different, Barcelona is the place to be, as Catalonia is swiftly becoming Spain’s leading producer of natural wine. Moreover, Barcelona’s emphasis on local and seasonal ingredients in its cuisine aligns perfectly with the ethos of natural wine.

Here are our favorite natural wine bars that are perfect for a romantic date or a fun night out with friends. These venues offer a curated selection of natural wines of all colors, both from local Catalan producers and international vineyards. Like most bars in Barcelona, our selected natural wine bars also serve delicious cheeses and snacks.

But what actually makes a wine a “natural wine“? A wine deserves to be called “natural wine” if it is produced with minimal intervention, giving priority to organic cultivation, avoiding additives and keeping the sulfur dioxide content low. The essence of natural wine is to bring out the genuine character of the grapes, often resulting in unfiltered wines with unique flavors and textures.

So, here’s to uncorking bottles filled with nature’s purest essence—cheers to natural wine! Enjoy these five fantastic natural wine bars in Barcelona.

Best spots to enjoy natural wine in Barcelona

    1. Petnat

    Photo: Eva Kern

The name of this natural wine bar in El Born says it all: Petnat (short for “Pétillant Naturel”) stands for natural sparkling wine. This is rooted in the old, original tradition of sparkling wine production, the so-called Méthode Ancestrale. What sets Petnat apart is its unique production process. Unlike traditional sparkling wines, which undergo a secondary fermentation in the bottle, Petnat is bottled before primary fermentation is complete, capturing the natural effervescence of the wine.

Step inside this cozy natural wine bar and you’ll discover a treasure trove of natural wines spanning across white, orange red, and rosé and sparkling varieties, each offering its own unique character and flavor profile. We not only like the large selection of delicious natural wines, but also the particularly friendly service and the colorful Petnat posters hanging throughout the venue. And let’s not forget about the mouthwatering oven-fresh focaccia that perfectly complements the wines. Highly recommended!

    Fun Fact:

Natural wines are like a blast from the past, as some winemakers use ancient methods, such as fermenting in clay pots, just like the old Greeks and Romans did thousands of years ago! This practice harkens back to the days of the ancient Greeks and Romans, echoing a time when winemaking was an art form deeply rooted in tradition and craftsmanship. By embracing these ancient techniques, today’s winemakers not only create unique and flavorful wines but also pay homage to the rich history of winemaking that spans thousands of years. So, when you raise a glass of your favorite natural wine, you’re not just enjoying a drink – you’re savoring a piece of history in every sip.

    Why natural wine?

For some time now, natural wine has been experiencing a real hype that is increasingly taking over Berlin. But why is everyone so keen on cloudy, unfiltered wine anyway? Natural wines are made with minimal intervention in the winemaking process, often with organic or biodynamic grapes and without adding chemicals or artificial ingredients. The result is unique wines that express their terroir and are usually more sustainable.

It’s worth noting that natural wines, due to their lack of sulfites or additives, also reduce the risk of headaches and hangovers. But you better try for yourself.
